From the glacially-shaped lakes and wetlands of the north to the broad river corridors of the Missouri and Mississippi, Iowa’s surface water systems define the some of the most agriculturally productive land in North America. This Iowa Hydrological Map captures that complexity in a single, visually stunning art print – mapping every major river, lake, stream, and intermittent waterway across the state using data directly from the USGS National Hydrography Dataset, the most comprehensive and authoritative hydrological database available.
Whether you’re a geographer, hydrologist, educator, outdoor enthusiast, or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of a well-crafted map, this print transforms raw scientific data into an elegant work of wall art you’ll return to again and again.
This Iowa river system map goes far beyond a simple geography reference. Every feature has been carefully symbolized to communicate real hydrological meaning at a glance.
Rivers, streams, and other drainageways are rendered using Strahler stream order, a standard classification system that ranks waterways by their position in the drainage hierarchy. A first-order stream is a small headwater tributary with no upstream tributaries of its own. As streams converge and grow, their order increases. The Mississippi, the Missouri, the Des Moines, and the Iowa River – these are high-order streams that represent the culmination of thousands of smaller tributaries both feeding and draining some of the most productive agricultural land on the planet. By encoding this hierarchy visually, the map shows not just where water flows, but how much and from how far it has traveled.
Due to differences in how the Strahler stream order is calculated across jurisdictions, using it as the only symbology metric occasionally causes visual inconsistencies. To rectify this, we also incorporate the Total Drainage Area calculation to balance visual inconsistencies that can arise from using Strahler stream order alone. Subtle terrain shading rounds out the picture, giving the print a sense of depth and placing every waterway in the context of the landscape that shapes it.
The result is not just an Iowa hydrology print, it’s a portrait of the state’s circulatory system.
Every map is printed on premium photo paper using archival quality giclée inks, the same standard used in fine art galleries and museums. Giclée printing produces exceptionally sharp linework, vibrant and accurate color reproduction, and prints that are certified to resist fading for decades.
Each print is individually produced in the USA, with attention to detail that makes the difference between something you hang on a wall and something you genuinely treasure.
Framed options are available in a black woodgrain frame with a plexiglass front and pre-installed hanging hardware, so your map arrives ready to display. Prefer to frame it yourself? The print-only option ships flat up to 16in x 20in and larger sizes are rolled in a sturdy shipping tube, arriving ready for any standard frame.
This Iowa river map makes a meaningful and distinctive gift for a wide range of people and occasions:
Available in three sizes – 8×10, 16×20, and 24×30 inches – this print scales beautifully whether you’re hanging it in a study nook or making a statement above a sofa or desk.

The hydrological data depicted in this map is derived entirely from the USGS National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) a federally maintained, high-resolution database of surface water features across the United States. The NHD is the gold standard for hydrological mapping and is used by government agencies, academic researchers, and environmental organizations nationwide. Stream hierarchy is calculated and visualized using the Strahler stream order method and Total Drainage Area, providing a scientifically grounded representation of Iowa’s river and stream network.
